New year, new look: Colours of the year 2019

Colour brightens and enhances our lives, and thatโ€™s why we love to use it in our homes. But how should we choose which colour to use and how do we know which shades are on trend? Meet the experts from colour institute Pantone, who each year diligently announce their โ€œcolour of the yearโ€. For 2019โ€™s colour of the year, the panel has opted for Pantoneโ€™s โ€œLiving Coral 16-1546โ€. A surprising choice, perhaps, for the general public โ€“ but one that was pre-empted by the design scene, where creators are already designing furniture and accessories with a coral-inspired colour palette.

Living Coral: Coral pink is the colour of the year for 2019

After the darker purple hues of last yearโ€™s Ultra Violet, the colour experts at Pantone have decided that a brighter coral tone is top of the colour billing this season. They describe Living Coral as โ€œan animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge.โ€ In fact, the institute views its choice of Living Coral as a tribute to the natural inspiration of the underwater world: Like coral reefs in nature, the shade is vivifying and effervescent and, according to the colour experts, is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.

Coral in the home

Last summer, the interior design sector took a colour that had previously been largely ignored โ€“ orange โ€“ and used it to great effect in furniture, textiles, kitchen equipment and accessories, adding bright coral-toned highlights to many interiors. Living Coral is the natural extension of this trend, reflecting a youthful exuberance in pop-art-inspired wallpapers, velvety sofas and armchairs and fluffy blankets and rugs. The golden undertones of Living Coral mean that it also works well with more traditional, understated interior styles. According to the experts, the colour is nurturing and familiar, making it a versatile addition to any interior at any time of year.

Understated but energising: Spiced Honey is the Dulux colour of the year for 2019

If you prefer to keep things slightly more subtle, the warm amber tones of Spiced Honey might be just what youโ€™re looking for to bring your interior colour scheme up to date for 2019. The Dulux colour of the year for 2019 has a sophisticated gold shimmer and extraordinary transformational abilities: Spiced Honey can be used as part of a tone-on-tone colour scheme or combined with bright berry reds, greys or pinks if you want to really make an impact. Adorning walls with a Living Coral and Spiced Honey colour scheme produces a breathtaking effect.
