Colours of the year 2022: shades to ring in the new season
Interior trends are not only about aesthetics: they are also a reflection of society as a whole. How we paint our walls or what furniture pieces we choose says a lot about the way we live – and where we are headed in the future.
The forecasts of Pantone and Dulux offer thus important insights into prevalent sentiments of our time. That being said, let’s take a closer look at the meaning behind the latest colour trends.
Pantone’s colour of the year 2022: Very Peri
This time around, the choice of Pantone came as quite a surprise. Those who had placed their bet on a bold and loud tone couldn’t have been further off: Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2022 is a fusion of dynamic blue and red-purple hues.
According to the institute, Very Peri serves as “symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through”. The colour draws inspiration from the virtual world, particularly digital art scenes, the metaverse, and online gaming. Its name was derived from “Periwinkle Blue”, a shade with many different facets that mirror the colour spectrum of myrtle.
A colour trend for a fresh perspective
The novel mix of blue and red-purple sparks creativity, vitality, and our imagination. This triple effect can work its magic in many different settings. In home offices or multi-purpose rooms, Very Peri helps us think clearly and be more productive. You can also use the colour of the year 2022 to accentuate single walls in living and dining areas or kitchens. Its soft, warm glow transmits a sense of continuity and dynamic motion.
When it comes to design, Very Peri proves equally versatile. In time for Pantone’s announcement, the British label Hovia introduced a new collection of wallpapers. The collection incorporates the four most recent “colours of the year”, up to 2022. Among these, Very Peri is showcased on a photographic wallpaper called “Memphis Blues”. The geometrical patterns of this design pay homage to the artists who came to be known as the “Memphis Group” in the 1980s.
How Very Peri upgrades your interior
From wallpapers to countertops and selected pieces of furniture – Very Peri can accentuate living spaces in various ways. Striking and soothing at the same time, it catches the eye without stealing the limelight from its surroundings. On the contrary: the warm blue foregrounds subtle highlights which might otherwise take a backseat.
Together with light wooden furniture, natural materials, and creamy-white or anthracite surfaces, Very Peri unfolds its full potential especially well.
Another way to bring out the colour of the year 2022 at home: switches and socket outlets from the Gira E2 design line. In black matt or grey matt, they create an intriguing play of contrasts when placed against a warm blue backdrop.

Dulux’s colour of the year 2022: Bright Skies
The colour experts at Dulux also predicted a blue shade for the new season. But in comparison to Very Peri, Bright Skies has a more light-hearted and airy appeal.
Reflecting the vastness of open skies, it adds a natural, open feel to indoor spaces – a breath of fresh colour for anyone who needs a change of scenery in 2022. To complement the new tone, Dulux has created four complementary palettes as a source of inspiration for your own home.
1. Workshop Colours is the perfect palette for flexible living spaces. Soft hues of yellow, pink, and blue create a feel-good atmosphere that makes it easy to work, play, or relax.
2. Combined with the Greenhouse palette, Bright Skies adds vitalising accents to living and dining rooms: crips shades of green, grey, and blue take the calming effect of natural landscapes inside.
3. The Studio palette turns any room into a wellnes oasis. Alongside Dulux’s colour of the year 2022, muted tones ranging from lilac to orange invite you to lean back and recharge.
4. If you want a subtle background to underscore individual highlights, the Salon Colours palette will do the trick. Soft neutral shades and different nuances around Bright Skies leave ample room to let your creativity run wild.
For some more stylish accents on your wall, we recommend pairing the colour of the year with Gira Esprit switches and socket outlets.
The earthy tones of frames made from linoleum-plywood complement the airy blue perfectly – just like clear skies hovering over open fields.

New year, new colour: embracing change throughout the seasons
Dulux and Pantone were not the only ones who shared insights into the colour trends for 2022. Leading expert groups such as the Natural Colour Academy and Avient published their prognoses as early as August of 2021 – which gives us even more to look forward to in the upcoming season.
With Pantone’s and Dulux’s colours of the year 2022, we are reminded once more how important it is to recognize the beauty in change. Whatever the future may hold, it will always present us with an opportunity to grow and evolve. Shades such as Very Peri and Bright Skies thereby symbolize a variety of possibilities waiting on the horizon: new styles, new technologies, and new ways of living.
